# 105 | How to Set Boundaries in your Interior Design Business (& Life)

setting boundaries

“Boundaries are simply expectations — they’re how you show people how you want to be treated and where your yeses and nos are.”

If there’s one topic that consistently comes up in conversations with interior designers, it’s boundaries.

As designers, we care deeply about our clients and our work. We want to be helpful, responsive, and accommodating. But over time, constantly saying yes can quietly lead to burnout, resentment, and a business that starts to feel heavier than it should.

In this episode, Becca and I talk about what boundaries really are and why they’re so important for interior designers building sustainable businesses. At their core, boundaries are simply expectations — a way of communicating how we want to work, how we want to be treated, and where our time and energy are best spent.

I walk through four types of boundaries that frequently show up in design businesses: time boundaries, scope boundaries, emotional boundaries, and financial boundaries. From defining office hours and communication expectations to preventing scope creep and protecting emotional bandwidth, these boundaries help designers operate with more clarity and confidence.

We also talk about something many designers struggle with: the fear that setting boundaries will make us seem difficult or inflexible. In reality, the opposite is often true. Clear boundaries help build trust with clients, protect your reputation, and allow you to deliver your best work. When expectations are clearly set, everyone benefits.

The most important thing to remember is that boundaries are a practice. None of us get it perfect right away. But by listening to your intuition, noticing when something feels off, and remembering that boundaries serve both you and your clients, you can begin building a business that truly supports your life.
