# 102 | Nurturing Your Creativity as an Interior Designer

“If we can redefine creativity as something that gives us joy — we’re doing it simply for the sake of doing it — that fits into overall wellness and health.”

If you’ve ever told yourself you’re “not really creative,” this episode is your gentle (and slightly spicy) invitation to rethink that. Because creativity isn’t reserved for painters, poets, or the designers who seem to effortlessly pull magic out of thin air. Creativity is something you already have — and for interior designers, it’s one of your greatest business assets.

In this conversation, we talk about redefining creativity in a way that feels more real and more accessible: creativity is simply making connections. Seeing a new option where someone else sees a dead end. Pairing ideas in a way that solves a client’s problem and makes the space feel like home. It’s not always about making something “productive.” Sometimes it’s about creating just because it lights you up — and that matters more than we like to admit.

We also unpack something that a lot of designers feel in their bones: when stress is high, creativity feels out of reach. Chronic stress can shrink your world down to what’s urgent, what’s loud, and what’s right in front of you. And when your brain is stuck in fight-or-flight, it’s a whole lot harder to access the kind of expansive thinking that design (and leadership) requires.

That’s why nurturing creativity isn’t fluffy — it’s part of wellness. Community, movement, better sleep, laughter, novelty, time away from screens, even observing art can all help your nervous system shift into a calmer state where creativity can actually show up again. Sometimes the most “strategic” thing you can do for your business is take a walk, work beside another designer, go to a concert, or sit with a sketchbook and make something with no outcome attached.

If you’re feeling stuck, heavy, or like your business requires more effort than it should, Kate invites you to the Business Blueprint Reset — a 4-day experience designed to help you get quiet, reconnect with what matters, and uncover what’s really driving your stress or indecision.
