In today's episode, I share why we sometimes need to pivot in business and then dive into how we can pivot. Often, when it comes to our own business, we find that we get stuck doing the same things repeatedly even if they aren't working anymore.

Just a few scenarios where this may happen include being unrealistic with client budgets, timelines, and expectations or our systems for creating and developing proposals and presentations. When we take some time to reflect on how we are doing specific tasks in our business, we find that they aren't as effective as they may have once been and it's time to pivot. This may include small micro-changes or it may involve big sweeping changes.

How do we pivot when something isn't working anymore?

Be Objective

It may be time to be honest with yourself without allowing for any judgment. This includes asking yourself questions like what is working? what isn't working? does this stem from feedback you received from a client? After looking at this list objectively, take some time to think about if there are small changes you can easily make or if it's time for a bigger change.

Be Different

Just because "everyone else is doing it that way" doesn't mean you have to! Maybe it's time for you to try your way and disrupt the industry. This takes courage, however, maybe doing things a different way is exactly what sets you apart and makes your services more desirable to your clientele. Maybe you decide to offer design-in-a-week services or offer a complimentary design consultation. Maybe you use social media differently than other interior designers. If you have something that sets you apart - use it!

Be Aligned with Your Core Values

When looking to make a change in your business ask yourself if pivoting would help align with your core values more. You may want to create more time for family or focus more on a certain design area and need to pivot to make that happen. If hospitality is a core value, perhaps you offer an additional call for certain services.

Be Creative:

Apply your creativity to problem-solving in your business. To pivot in business and create the business you love, be dedicated to testing out new ideas, trying them on a smaller scale, and receiving and listening to feedback from your clients and/or your team. In terms of team, make sure to include your team in the creation and brainstorming of new ways to pivot and serve your interior design clients as well so everyone is bought in!

Remember, pivoting is a sign of growth. It's acknowledging that something has an opportunity to improve, and it means you have your ear to the ground with clients, your team, and yourself, which is a huge part of creating a long-standing successful interior design business.
