I sat down with Andi Morse of Morse Design in Atlanta in today's episode. Andi shared how she believes offering multiple services is the key to getting your foot (literally and figuratively) in the door with clients. We chatted about good processes and protecting your creative energy, hiring, and business growth. Andi's down-to-earth sensibility has helped her run an efficient and creative design firm.
Variety of Service Offerings
Andi and those at her design firm truly believe and embody the importance of maintaining a positive attitude in all business interactions, including with accountants, bookkeepers, and contractors. Andi believes in offering multiple services to get a foot in the door with prospective clients. This includes a 2-hour consultation to help clients experience her design help without the commitment of a full home job. These consultations often lead to larger projects as clients become familiar with her work and trust her design skills.
Protecting Your Creative Energy
Creating a business with systems and processes to allow it to run while allowing us, as interior designers to still have time to work inside our creative energy. Having clear processes helps reduce anxiety for both you and your clients, ensuring everyone knows what to expect. Being able to have clear processes for communication and team members to help organize the back end of your business as well as to communicate with clients can free up your time, as the designer, to really create the space needed to tap into your creativity and focus on the design work.
Selling Your Value
When working with interior design clients, you are always selling yourself and presenting value in your early interactions. It is important to be seen as the problem solver and be able to frame issues in a positive light to build trust with clients. Creating an environment where you are likable and creating a positive conversation with clients is crucial for building a successful business.
Content Creation and Interior Design
Gaining your potential clients’ eye, as well as creating a presence online is crucial in finding clientele that fit into your ideal client goals. Andi created a monthly design magazine and a blog on business development to share content. Her regular newsletter helps capture interest and reminds clients of the services she offers, while the blog improves SEO and showcases her work. Content can all work together to create a package your clients will appreciate, grow your online presence, and draw your ideal client in. While content creation can be a long game, it helps bring in prospective clients regularly.
